HIRING PROCESS

The hiring process consists of several key stages:

1.      Job Vacancy
A vacancy arises and is posted as a competition. Candidates can then apply online for these job opportunities.

2.      Shortlisting
Hiring supervisors review all applications to compare them against the minimum qualifications outlined in the job description. From this, the leading candidates will be selected to move on to the interview stage.

3.      Structured Interview
Leading candidates will be contacted for an interview. The hiring supervisors (or their designates) will provide the interview details, including the date and time, and will ask if any accommodations are needed. The interview aims to assess candidates' education, experience, skills, and abilities.

4.      Employment Testing (if applicable)
For some positions, leading candidates may need to complete job-related testing. The hiring supervisor, or designate, will share the testing details and check if any accommodations are required.

5.      Reference Checks
Candidates who perform well in the interview and testing stages will be asked to provide two professional references. The hiring supervisors will conduct these reference checks, and successful references can lead to a conditional job offer.

6.      Conditional Offer
Once reference checks are complete, a conditional job offer will be made. This offer depends on meeting specific requirements for the position, such as a driver’s license check or validation of credentials, etc.

7.      Official Offer & Start Date
After all conditions are met, you’ll receive a written job offer, and we’ll establish a start date for your new role.

8.      Onboarding
Finally, once you’re on board, we’ll provide on site orientation and training in a virtual self-directed format to help you get settled in!

The length of the hiring process can vary depending on the specific competition. Generally, it may take up to six weeks or more to fill a vacancy. We appreciate your patience as we work to find the right fit for the role!

During the interview process, you can expect a structured interview conducted by a panel of interviewers. They will ask you a series of questions that are related to the job description for the position. Each panel member may take turns asking questions and taking notes as you respond, ensuring a thorough assessment of your fit for the role. It’s a great opportunity for you to showcase your skills and experiences!

Yes, some positions may require candidates to complete job-related assessments or tests. These could include evaluations of computer skills, mechanical knowledge, trade skills, presentation abilities, or financial skills, depending on the specific job requirements.

Once you receive an offer, the hiring supervisor will reach out to discuss your first day and kick off the onboarding process. Additionally, a Human Resources Analyst will contact you to schedule a “Sign-on” meeting. During this meeting, they will gather the necessary information to add you to our payroll system and enroll you in any applicable benefits.

If you need to reschedule your interview, please contact the hiring supervisor as soon as possible to let them know. They’ll appreciate your prompt communication, and it will help facilitate the rescheduling process.

We are committed to maintaining a transparent, fair, and equitable hiring process through a set of established recruitment, selection, and hiring policies and procedures. All hiring supervisors receive training on each phase of the process to ensure consistency. Our posted competitions adhere to defined job criteria and include structured interviews, job-related testing (when applicable), and practices that comply with legislation. This thorough approach helps us ensure fairness and impartiality in our hiring decisions.

PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW

To prepare for your interview, take some time to review the job duties associated with the position. Familiarize yourself with the services offered by the division that is hiring, as well as the broader services provided by the municipality to the community. This knowledge will help you engage thoughtfully during the interview and demonstrate your interest in the role and the organization.

It’s best to dress in professional attire for your interview. This shows that you take the opportunity seriously and are ready to make a great impression. Aim for a polished and neat appearance that reflects your professionalism.

During the interview, you can expect a range of job-related questions that are directly tied to the qualifications outlined in the job description. The structured interview will be conducted by a panel and may include the following types of questions:

  • Credential/technical knowledge questions: Assessing your relevant expertise.

  • Experience, activity, or skill-based questions: Exploring your background and practical skills.

  • Suitability & availability questions: Determining your fit for the role and your availability.

  • Opinion/situational questions: Understanding how you would approach various scenarios.

  • Behavioral (BDI) or performance-based questions: Evaluating your past behaviors to predict your future performance.

  • Probing questions: Encouraging you to elaborate on your responses for deeper insights.

This variety helps the panel gain a comprehensive understanding of your qualifications and how you would contribute to the team.

Yes, it’s a good idea to bring a copy of your application or resume for reference during the interview. This can help you stay focused and ensure you present your qualifications accurately. Additionally, be prepared to provide contact information for two professional references who can speak to your work-related experience. Having these items on hand will demonstrate your preparedness and professionalism.

If you find yourself stumped by a question during the interview, don’t worry! Here are a few strategies to handle the situation gracefully:

  • Take your time: It’s perfectly okay to pause and gather your thoughts.

  • Ask for clarification: If the question isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to ask the interviewer to rephrase or elaborate.

  • Admit you are unsure: Honesty is key. It’s better to acknowledge that you don’t know rather than guessing.

  • Ask follow-up questions: Engage the interviewer by asking questions related to the topic; this shows your interest and critical thinking.

  • Request to respond later: You can also ask if you can come back to the question at the end of the interview after you’ve had a chance to think.

Remember, how you handle challenging questions can demonstrate your problem-solving skills and adaptability!

Typically, technical assessments are conducted either before or after the interview itself. However, if there are any assessments scheduled during the interview, the hiring supervisor (or their designate) will inform you in advance. They will also ask if you require any accommodations to ensure you’re set up for success. This way, you can be fully prepared for any evaluations that may take place!

ONBOARDING PROCESS

On your first day, you can look forward to meeting with your direct supervisor, who will kick off your onboarding process. This will include an overview of your workplace and introductions to your fellow team members, helping you feel welcomed right away. You’ll also receive important information on health and safety policies, as well as an overview of corporate policies and procedures, including your responsibilities regarding computer use. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and get settled into your new role!

Your direct supervisor will inform you of any specific documents you need to bring for onboarding. Once you’ve received your official offer of employment and your start date is confirmed, a Human Resources Analyst will reach out to schedule a “Sign-on” meeting. During this meeting, they will gather the necessary information to add you to our payroll system and enroll you in any applicable benefits. Being prepared with the required documents will help ensure a smooth onboarding process!

During onboarding, you’ll receive training specific to your new workplace, including virtual, self-directed Corporate Orientation training. This allows you to learn at your own pace and get familiar with our company culture, policies, and procedures, helping you start off strong in your new role!
